Blue Circle method
This page explains how Blue Circle certification works: what we assess, how we measure it, how the score is assigned and how the result is kept up to date over time.
Chapter 01
In soilless farming almost everything is controllable: water, nutrients, energy, climate, batches. That is exactly why it can be measured and compared. Measuring shows where to improve and proves, with data, the value of a production model.
Chapter 02
The Blue Circle standard defines the requirements applicable to recirculating soilless facilities — hydroponics, aquaponics, aeroponics and bioponics — centred on closed-loop water and nutrient management. Core requirements include closed-loop recirculation, IPM control and zero waste, animal welfare for aquaponics, and renewable energy sources. Applicable requirements are identified during assessment based on the type of system.
Chapter 03
Every requirement is translated into measurable or verifiable indicators: quantities, records, the presence of procedures. Indicators make different companies comparable and make it possible to follow progress over time.
Chapter 04
Indicators are scored according to the Blue Circle methodology, which aggregates them per area and into an overall result. The score determines the outcome and gives the company a clear picture of strengths and room for improvement.
Chapter 05
Statements must be supported by evidence: data, records, documents, instrument readings. The company collects them through the self-assessment form. Companies using Blue Circle Software already hold most of that evidence in organised form.
Chapter 06
Blue Circle assesses the form and the evidence and decides whether the certification is granted. Where necessary an on-site assessment can be arranged, with travel costs quoted separately.
Chapter 07
A positive outcome is followed by the contract, the invoicing of the fee, the creation of the CERTIFIED showcase on the portal, the activation of the software add-on package for those who use it, and delivery of the printed certificate. Certification grants the right to use the Blue Circle mark on products and on site.
Chapter 08
The certification is valid for one year. The service fee for subsequent years includes the annual review, so information, score and showcase stay current and credible over time.
